The group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. On April 5 we will read and discuss: The Brain and the Inner World: An Introduction to the Neuroscience of Subjective Experience, by Mark Solms and Oliver Turnbull Forward by Oliver Sacks, pp. vii-xii, and Chapter 6: Dreams and Hallucinations, pp. 181-216. This book is Mark Solms’ fourth book and is a collaboration of Dr. Solms with Oliver Turnbull. As early as 1987, Dr. Solms expressed in an early paper his desire “to examine the relationship between psychoanalysis and neuropsychology…to show that psychoanalysis is based on sound neurological principles.” In the Forward, Oliver Sacks points out that while many since Freud have studied the interpretation of dreams, “who before Solms studied the neuropsychology of dreams, the ways in which their imagery, their style, even their existence could be transformed by damage to different areas of the brain?”
Learning Objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to
– Describe the relationship between REM sleep and dreaming.
– Describe the neurochemistry of REM.
– Discuss how the SEEKING system might well be considered the “primary driving force” of dreaming.
