Description

Although narcissism and psychopathy have been hot topics in the popular media in recent years, the DSM’s “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” and “Antisocial Personality Disorder” are limited and problematic sources of clinical understanding. Therapists need to know more in depth about how to help narcissistic and even psychopathic individuals as well as those who suffer in relationship with them. This workshop covers the continuum of narcissistic dynamics and their implications for clinicians.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Construe narcissistic and psychopathic psychologies in terms of underlying themes rather than observable, present-versus-absent traits.
  • Describe the continuum from normal narcissistic preoccupations through malignant narcissism to frank psychopathy, and the DSM’s Antisocial Personality Disorder.
  • Depict at least two treatment approaches for narcissistic problems.
