Galit Atlas, PhD
Galit Atlas, Ph.D., is a psychoanalyst and clinical supervisor in private practice in Manhattan. She is on the faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis and at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She has published three books for clinicians and numerous psychoanalytic articles. Her book, Emotional Inheritance, is an international bestseller translated into 28 languages. Dr. Atlas serves on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Psychoanalytic Perspectives. She is a recipient of the NADTA Research Award, the Gradiva Award, and the Nautilus Book Award. Her new book is Come Closer: Childhood Wounds, Adult Love and the Secrets of Emotional Intimacy.
In this in-person presentation, Dr. Atlas examines how our capacity for intimacy depends on our ability to hold the multiplicity of self-states we carry into adult relationships. Intimacy inevitably awakens our child self-states: we bring to our later relationships all the injuries we have survived, the unmet needs we’ve buried, the scars we’ve collected, and the solutions we have found. Our internal children often hold the wheel and drive our most important relationships. Through a clinical tale, Dr. Atlas introduces The Melancholic Child — a dissociated self-state that holds our unrecognized early experiences of loss, heartbreak, disappointment, and emotional deadness. We will discuss how the Melancholic Child within us, often unspoken, plays a crucial role in shaping our love lives and how we navigate between loyalty to the past and commitment to the future.
