NPAP Spring Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group

Presenter

Lynn Somerstein, PhD, LP

Contributor

Walter Nieves, MD, Consulting Neurologist

Description

The Reading Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. During the 2025-26 academic year our focus will be on early infant development.

For this meeting, we will discuss:

Beebe, Beatrice & Lachmann, Frank (2002) Infant Research and Adult Treatment: Co-Constructing Interactions.

Chapter 4: “Early Capacities and Pre-Symbolic Representation,” pp. 65-84.

This book explores how infant research insight informs psychoanalytic therapy and demonstrates how dyadic interactions reorganize intrapsychic processes, in both patient and therapist.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by “presymbolic representation” and how it is different from “symbol formation.”
  • Describe what is meant by “interaction patterns” between mother and infant and what significance they have in an infant’s development.
  • Enumerate and describe three areas of presymbolic representations in infants in the first year of life.

Open to

CE Credits

1.5 CE contact hours will be granted to participants with documented attendance and complete evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to all participants.
