Description

The Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. During the 2026–27 academic year we will be reading Mark Solms’ new book, The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Health and Louis Cozolino’s book Why Therapy Works: Using Our Minds to Change our Brains.

For this meeting, we will read:

Solms, Mark (2026) The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing.

Introduction: The Symptoms, pp. 1-14; Chapter One: Censors, pp, 15-41; Chapter Two: The Interpretation of Dreams, pp. 42- 63.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

Identify four of Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts, which have been widely criticized, but have nevertheless come into common usage.
Identify three of the political and/or social ideas that contributed to the marginalization of Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts.
Explain how Freud’s background as a neurologist influenced the development of his psychoanalytic theory.
