NPAP Fall Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group

Presenters

Ann Rose Simon, LCSW

Description

The Reading Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. During the 202526 academic year our focus will be on Early Infant Development. For this meeting, we will discuss the following chapter:

Stern, Daniel (1985). “The Sense of an Emergent Self”, Chapter 3, pp. 37-68, in The Interpersonal World of the Infant: A View from Psychoanalysis and Developmental Psychology, Basic Books, Inc.: New York.

This excellent chapter gives us a very detailed, nuanced view of how the infant experiences the world through its senses and how these experiences become part of the emergent sense of self. “Daniel Stern brings together the exciting new research on infants and the insights of psychoanalysis to offer an original theory on how human beings create a sense of themselves and their relation to others.”

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what Stern calls the infant’s state of “alert inactivity” and what Stern believes the infants are doing during these times.
  • Explain why the infant’s direct social experiences have come to be seen as the central focus of the infant’s early subjective life.
  • Enumerate and describe three “processes” that are involved in the formation of the “sense of an emergent self” and other.
