NPAP Fall Continuing Education PROGRAM

Professional Posttraumatic Growth and Therapeutic Intimacy in Response to Collective Trauma

Presenter

Carol Tosone, PhD, LCSW

Moderator

Michael de Simone, PhD, LCSW

Description

As clinicians working with survivors of trauma and mass disaster, we are repeatedly exposed to traumatic material by virtue of the nature of our work. When we live and work in areas prone to natural or man-made disasters, acts of terrorism, or other catastrophic events such as Covid, we are exposed in a first-hand way as witnesses to and victims of trauma. This experience of shared trauma offers the unique challenge of contending with personal loss while helping others, as well as providing opportunities for shared resilience and posttraumatic growth, both personal and professional. Enhanced therapeutic intimacy and therapist disclosure, along with the blurring of boundaries may be an outcome of dual exposure to collective trauma.
