NPAP Spring Continuing Education PROGRAM

Lord Jim - I'm Him

Presenter

Gavriel Reisner, PhD, LP

Moderator

Alice Entin, LCSW

Description

On the presenter’s mysterious title: “Lord Jim – I’m Him,” Conrad learned French before he knew English, but one hardly needs to be fluent to see that “Jim” is an interesting combination of “Je (I)” and “him.” Je’im contracts to J’im, creating a word that says: “I’m him.”  Readers of Lord Jim can identify with Jim’s state-of-being where they come so near to beauty and fulfillment that they are at the edge of a precipice, looking down, feeling dizzy, totally uncertain about who they are.  When the one we want to be eludes us, we turn into the ghost of the self.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the reasons for their strange empathy for a protagonist who would seem, on the surface of things, unworthy of the reader’s feelings.
  • Distinguish the Loewaldian definition between ghosts and ancestors as they experience the role the adventurer-philosopher, Stein, plays in the novel that teaches us how to escape from our own ghosts.
  • Identify the Winnicottian connection to the Patusan that becomes the Transitional Space where a troubled person can finally discover an active, independent self.
