Systematic racism has been so prevalent and persistent in the United States for centuries and persists today. In fact, it is so much in the forefront that artists of color need to confront in their artwork the traumas they have faced. This presentation will look at the work of contemporary artists of color and how they confront racism. The focus will be on contemporary artists, but references will be made as well to artists from the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights movement. In addition, a controversy involving a white artist dealing with a racist subject will be looked at. This talk will resonate for therapists in their clinical work, in relation, for example, to intergenerational transmission of trauma, countertransference, etc.
After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:
Discuss how systematic racism has penetrated generations of families and how therapists respond to trauma.
2 CE contact hours will be granted to participants with documented attendance and complete evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to all participants.
