Sometimes the pain is quieter: a flatness, a sense of being stuck, out of control, or repeating the same dynamics in work, love, and life. It can feel like something inside is misfiring, even if you can’t explain why.
Our work helps you understand the roots of your experience—how early relationships, unconscious beliefs, and long-standing emotional patterns may be shaping how you feel today. It’s about depth, meaning, and lasting change.
Even if you can’t name why you’re feeling disconnected, emotional, or overwhelmed by “something off,” therapy with us can help you reconnect with yourself, your past, and your future.
Since 1948, at the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP) we have been training therapists in some of the most rigorous and respected psychoanalytic programs in the country. Founded by Theodor Reik, a student of Freud, NPAP was created to make psychoanalysis accessible beyond the medical field.
Today, we continue that mission by training therapists from a range of professional and academic backgrounds through rigorous coursework, personal analysis, and supervised clinical work. Every therapist affiliated with NPAP has received high-level training grounded in both classical and contemporary psychoanalytic approaches.
The Theodor Reik Clinical Center (TRCC) has served New York since 1949, offering high-quality, affordable psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for more than 76 years.
Our psychoanalytic therapy offers a space to slow down and understand yourself on a deeper level. It’s less about tools and tips and more about uncovering what’s been hidden—shaped by early experiences and lived out in the present without your awareness.
Rather than focusing only on treating symptoms, we help you understand why you feel what you feel, why certain patterns keep showing up, and how to respond with greater clarity, agency, and self-compassion.
You’ll meet with a therapist who is:
For some clients, therapy takes place once a week. For others, it occurs two to four times a week, offering a deeper and more immersive experience. In either case, our model ensures that treatment remains accessible and thoughtfully tailored to your needs.
We offer a low-cost, private-pay model. This means:
Therapists in our practice are all master-level clinicians enrolled in rigorous post-graduate psychoanalytic training programs. Many bring prior careers, diverse life experiences, and rich cultural perspectives to their work.
This isn’t an overnight change, but it’s meaningful, sustainable, and deep.
Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy help people understand how their past affects how they feel and act today. Therapists trained in these approaches look at deep patterns, thoughts, and feelings that might not be easy to see at first. This kind of therapy helps people make sense of their emotions and feel more in control of their lives.
TRCC is a sliding-scale therapy clinic located in the West Village and serves as the training clinic for NPAP. TRCC is staffed by both licensed and unlicensed training therapists who are in psychoanalytic training at NPAP.
