NPAP Spring Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group

Presenter

Michael Spier, LCSW

Contributor

Walter Nieves, MD, Consulting Neurologist

Description

The Reading Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. During the 2025-26 academic year our focus will be on early infant development.

For this meeting, we will discuss:

Beebe, Beatrice & Lachmann, Frank (2002) Infant Research and Adult Treatment: Co-Constructing Interactions.

Chapter 8: “Three Principles of Salience in the Organization of the Patient-Analyst Interaction: The Case of Clara,” pp. 185-207

This book explores how infant research insight informs psychoanalytic therapy and demonstrates how dyadic interactions reorganize intrapsychic processes, in both patient and therapist.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three principles of salience and their role in the development of early, pre-symbolic internalization processes.
  • Explain how adult relational patterns in psychotherapy reflect early dyadic regulation processes identified in infant research.
  • Identify key nonverbal communication elements—such as gaze, prosody, rhythm, and timing.
  • Discuss how they shape therapist-client interactions.

Open to

CE Credits

1.5 CE contact hours will be granted to participants with documented attendance and complete evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to all participants.
