NPAP Spring Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Psychodynamic Case Study as Creative Non-Fiction: On Responsible Creativity in Clinical Writing

Presenter

Aner Govrin, PhD

Moderator

Penny Rosen, MSW, LCSW-R, BCD-P

Description

Based on the first comprehensive guide for writing psychodynamic case studies, this presentation explores the case study as a genre of creative non-fiction. It examines the inherent tension between clinical accuracy and narrative craft, defining “responsible creativity” as the ethical deployment of literary techniques to illuminate therapeutic truth without fabrication. Drawing on examples from Freud to Oliver Sacks, and demonstrating different writing styles for case descriptions, it offers practical guidelines for clinicians navigating artful storytelling and scientific integrity.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between responsible creativity and fabrication in clinical case writing, include criteria for ethical violations.
  • Identify different writing styles for psychodynamic case studies — from traditional clinical reporting to contemporary subjective narration.
  • Assess how each writing approach best serves clinical truth.
