Jack Wiener, LP
Claire Steinberger, EdD, LP, Esq.
This presentation is an experiential as well as theoretical program on “Somatization.” The workshop will focus on ideas underlying Jack Wiener’s longtime practice as a psychoanalyst specializing in overtime “mind-body” (psyche-soma) outcomes.  Jack highlights early child development, where stress and anxiety generated in the early (non-verbal) environment are expressed in muscular and somatic patterns that continue throughout the lifecycle. His attention on the vulnerable self and “psychotic core” brings attention to the nature of the sensitive self, habitual psychosomatic (physical and emotional) patterns, and experience of emotion through the muscular.Â
Jack Weiner, LP, is a psychoanalyst and senior member and faculty of NPAP. His presentations and books explore the mind-body connection, and the body as a conveyor of psychic struggle and sensitivity. His books include: The Way of the Fourth Toe (2011), focusing on unconscious expression and the relationship among dance, pedagogy, psychotherapy, and creative movement. His discoveries in 1959 led to the founding of the School for Creative Movement and training for actors, as well as teacher-training including international students. He directed and choreographed more than thirty productions, including Martin Buber’s “Elijah” and Isaac Bashevis Singer’s “Gimpel the Fool.” He danced and choreographed for many years and was featured in a New York Times Magazine article by Anatole Broyard, “It’s Your Move.” He has presented workshop for universities, psychoanalytic institutes, and the American Dance Therapy Association. Â
