NPAP Winter Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group

Presenter

Robert Wolf, LP, DPsa

Description

The Reading Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers that explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically-informed psychotherapy. At this meeting, we will discuss the following: Chapter 13: “The Neurobiology of Attachment,” pp. 236-261, in Cozolino, Louis (2017) The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy: Healing the Social Brain (Third Edition) W.W. Norton and Co.: New York and London

Cozolino describes how early interpersonal life experiences shape the neurobiological processes of our brain.  While our genes first serve to organize the brain, it is experience that “orchestrates genetic transcription in the ongoing adaptive shaping of neural systems.” Therefore, “experience becomes the actual hardware of our brains.”

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify five theories about “The Evolution of Complexity” – how humans evolved to be the complex social creatures we are.
  • Define the “experience-dependent plasticity.”
  • Describe how “vagal tone” impacts on all levels of psychosocial and cognitive development.
