NPAP Fall Continuing Education PROGRAM

The Edith Laufer Neuropsychoanalytic Clinical Study Group

Presenter

Mary Edlow, PhD

Description

The Reading Group will read, study, and discuss books and papers by distinguished authors and researchers who explore some of the seminal concepts and clinical issues in neuropsychoanalytically-informed psychotherapy. At this meeting, we will discuss the following paper: Elysia Poggi Davis and Laura M. Glynn (2024). The Power of Predictability: Patterns of Signals in Early Life Shape Neurodevelopment and Mental Health Trajectories.  J Child Psychol Psychiatry. Author manuscript; available in PMC 2025 April 01.  Published in final edited form as: J Child Psychol Psychiatry. 2024 April; 65(4): 508–534. doi:10.1111/jcpp.13958.

This paper is a synthesis of the many pathways that influence the developing brain.  It is a granular and extensive review of the many ways the brain develops and is affected by the unpredictable.  We will be discussing unpredictability, its mechanism, impact on the development, especially during sensitive time periods, and implications for what Thomas Friedman (NY Times) is calling the pliocene period, a new era in human history that calls for creative ways of thinking and a new focus on how education may be effective.  This perspective seems particularly pertinent in our current highly unpredictable times.

Learning Objectives

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how unpredictability, a new conceptual model, has profound neurodevelopmental and evolutionary implications. unpredictable maternal mood during pregnancy and postpartum –measured using “mood entropy”—is a powerful predictor of child emotional and cognitive outcomes.
  • Explicate the mechanisms of how mood entropy (in this context, unpredictable maternal mood, measured with questionnaires) predicts children’s emotional reactivity, cognitive outcomes and brain network from infancy to adolescence.
  • Enumerate early interventions, such as emotion regulation, promoting routines, and future research directions.
