The presenter will explore treatment failure as a clinically meaningful and scientifically promising event. A case illustration re-frames a difficult treatment, giving rise to clinical investigation into psychic structure and defense, the elasticity of the treatment method, and the strengths and limitations of the analyst as well as the psychoanalytic model itself. The presenter places clinical failure on a continuum, where it leads to insight into the unevenness of treatment dynamics and effectiveness: “Both success and failure provide the knowledge base for continued scientific exploration of the human psyche and psychoanalytic theory.”
Learning Objectives After attending this presentation, participants will be able to
– Describe one way a treatment failure leads to positive learning opportunity.
– Define the meaning of the analyst standing equidistant from success and failure.
Open to NPAP members and candidates I no cost
non-members I $30.00
