This case presentation addresses the clinical application of attachment theory in the treatment of adults in individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After reviewing the history and basic theory of attachment theory, the focus will be on the clinical implications of different attachment styles in working with adult patients. Clinical material will explore how these early relational patterns become represented in the child’s inner world and are subsequently re-enacted in adult life, including in the therapeutic relationship. The instructor will demonstrate how therapists may deepen their understanding of early maladaptive relational patterns and enhance empathic interventions to develop more secure attachments in adult relating.

Learning Objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to
– Describe the relational pattern underpinning attachment styles.
– Assess clinical issues of relationship and intimacy characteristic of attachment styles.
– Describe the transference, countertransference, defenses, and resistances characteristic of attachment styles.
– Discuss clinical interventions appropriate for working with patients from each style.
