The presentation will address some of the key concepts (signifier, body, jouissance) in Lacanian psychoanalysis from the perspective of Jacques Lacan’s later teachings, as elaborated in and after Seminar XX: On Feminine Sexuality: The Limits of Love and Knowledge, which was delivered in 1972-1973. The presentation will consider some of the theoretical shifts that take place in Lacan’s conceptualization of clinical practice—from his early writings that focus on the concept of the Name-of-the-Father to his later teachings that emphasize the notion of the symptom—in order to show the clinical relevance of Lacan’s later theorization for a contemporary psychoanalysis.

Learning Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants will be able to
– Identify key concepts in Lacanian psychoanalysis.
– Differentiate between Lacan’s early and later teachings.
– Describe the stakes of differential diagnosis for clinical practice.
