In psychoanalysis, interpretation has been defined as the agent of change. Yet much of what we say to patients does not fit under the heading of interpretation, even in its broadest possible definition. So what are we to make of all that we say that does not fit? Does it not count? Is it not relevant to what is curative or does it in fact play a crucial role? This workshop will present a new way of thinking about what is curative. The presenters conceptualize the therapeutic relationship as consisting of a trailing edge and a leading edge to which both patient and analyst contribute. Interwoven with Peter’s theoretical formulation Laura will present her work with a patient that illustrates those ideas, entitled: Dancing for the Mirror.

Learning Objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to
– Identify the difference between leading edge and the trailing edge of the psychoanalytic relationship.
– Differentiate between the repetitive transference and the generative transference.
– Identify the role of interpretation in the work with the repetitive transference and the generative transference.
