Dr. Constantian will be presenting the results of his work on the psychological issues underpinning the expressed need of many of his patients for multiple plastic surgeries. The focus is on the underlying traumatic issues that force these patients into an ongoing attempt to repair internal damage through surgical interventions. Here the effect of early childhood trauma and neglect will be presented as it drives the “need” for plastic surgery. The impact of Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Borderline conditions on both the desire for surgery and the difficulty with accepting a positive outcome of surgery will be explored. The internal issues that make it impossible for these patients to accept the “repair” of their deficit and the various difficulties these patients may present for therapists will be addressed.

Learning Objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to
– Discuss the early childhood issues of neglect and trauma that may result in body shame, the inability to develop a positive self (body) image.
– Identify the effect of early childhood trauma on stress regulation and hypothalamic pituitary response, the cumulative impact on chronic health issues.

Open to NPAP members and candidates I no cost
non-members I $30.00

1.5 CE contact hours will be granted to participants with documented attendance and complete evaluation form. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance will be emailed to all participants.
