Certain patients elicit powerful counter-transference reactions which, if unaddressed, can express themselves through the body. Freud’s article, “Dostoevsky and Parricide”, provides the structure for this presentation, which will show how neurology and psychoanalysis can be used to deal with “genuine epilepsy,” a form of this disorder which has both a physical and psychological basis. The presenter will describe the grand mal seizure he had twenty-fives ago immediately after seeing a patient. Reflections on two seminal psychoanalytic thinkers on epilepsy and psychosomatosis, Abram Kardiner (“The Bio-analytics of the Epileptic Reaction”) and Joyce McDougall (“The Theaters of the Body”), might explain what happened to the presenter. Analysts’ somatic counter-transference reactions to their patients will be addressed.

Learning objectives: After attending the presentation, participants will be able to
– Identify the types of situations which might lead to a somatic counter-transference.
– Describe the psychodynamics of patients who suffer from epilepsy.

Open to NPAP members and candidates at No Cost; and to non-members $30
